The Supreme Court ruled that candidates those contesting
elections should reveal the sources of their income as well as that of their
spouses and children. As of now, a candidate is required to disclose details of
assets and liabilities for self, spouse and three dependents while filing
nomination paper but not the source of income. The order came on a plea by NGO
Lok Prahari which sought an additional column in the candidates’ nomination
papers, requiring them to disclose their sources of income as well as that of family
members.
