WHY NO LAW ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE CHIEF ELECTION COMMISSION: SUPREME COURT TO CENTRE

The Supreme Court wondered why there was no law on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and observed that leaving it entirely to the political executive would not ensure independence of the poll panel. The Court made this statement while hearing a plea filed by one Anoop Barnwal argued that appointment of ECs solely by political masters did not augur well for a democracy.
