The Supreme Court has refused to direct the Centre to amend
the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act for allowing abortion beyond the
legally permissible period of 20 weeks. However, it has agreed to hear a plea
for the setting up of a permanent mechanism for the expedient termination of
pregnancies over 20 weeks long in cases involving rape survivors and abnormal
fetuses. The court, however, issued notice to the Centre seeking its response
on instituting a mechanism for allowing the termination of pregnancies beyond
20 weeks in exceptional cases.
