MATERNITY BENEFIT ACT, 2017

The Maternity Benefit Act 2017 has came into force from march 29 and under this new law, women employees will now be able to avail paid maternity leave of 26 weeks as compared to just 12 weeks earlier.

NO NEED OF AADHAAR FOR WELFARE SCHEMES

The Supreme Court said that the Aadhaar card cannot be made mandatory by the Government for extending the benefits of social welfare schemes to the people. It also said that the government cannot be stopped from using Aadhaar in other schemes like opening of bank accounts, filling IT returns.

HIGH COURT HAS POWERS TO CORRECT ERRORS IN JUDICIAL RECORDS

A division of Hyderabad High Court bench said that the HighCourt has got the power to review and correct any errors apparent in its record, including errors in orders passed on the judicial side.

Law and Housing Ministry Indrakaran Reddy stated that the 2,91,701 cases of Telangana state were pending before High Court and another 5,38,131 cases were pending in district courts and other courts across the state.

ENEMY PROPERTY AMENDMENT AND VALIDATION BILL

The Lok Sabha had passed a bill – Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Act – to amend a 49-year-old law to guard against claims of succession or transfer by heirs, of property left behind by those who migrated to Pakistan and China.

DIGITALIZATION OF SUPREME COURT IN 200 DAYS

To reduce the paper usage in the court, Chief Justice of India J S Khekar declared that the Supreme Court will go paperless in six to seven months and there will be no need for appellants to file records.

SUPREME COURT NOW SETS THE BAIL, TRAIL TIME

A bench of Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit asked the High Courts to issue directions to subordinate courts in cases where the accused is in custody, magisterial trial should be concluded within six months and sessions trial (for offences punishable by more than seven years) within two years.
